Amputation is one of the most shocking things we see in our society. No doubt it is everywhere you look, even if you don't notice. Soldiers crippled from combat, the unlucky caught in traumatic accidents, the ill-fated with diseases leading to the loss of a limb. Prior to amputation, I didn't notice just how prevalent it is in our culture. Almost every horror film uses amputation as the ultimate visually horrific thing to could happen to a human being.
In order to remove all signs of cancer and enlarge the tumor margin (the distance between the cancerous and healthy cells-the larger the better), Steve received an amputation. He is now called an Above Knee amputee or AK. The AK has had at least one leg removed at any point above the knee joint. With the help of gosteve.org, steve was able to receive what is known as the C-leg.
As archaic as this may seem, medical technology has advanced greatly in the recent years and is nothing short of spectacular. Some prosthetics are now computers that need to be charged and programmed; people are able to compete in the Olympics (almost); or better yet, simply put, I can walk. Would you like to swim? There's a leg for that. Would you like to hike? We have a leg for you. Biking? Sure, you bet.
'Fake' legs have certainly come a long way!
